Shiny Living Dex (91-100)

All right we got another batch and after this, I will officially be a quarter of the way to the goal. So let’s get going.

Number 91

Now that we were getting closer to triple digits, I made it my mission to not find any more repeats. So I decided to stick to only isolated encounters and outbreaks until I reached my goal. I went to a Gastly outbreak with that in mind, only for it to reset almost immediately after I got there. Not only that, but I found a repeat shiny Varoom. I was not off to a good start.

Now with a new batch of outbreaks to choose from, I headed to one filled with Yungoos located in a cave. I gave up after three hours because I got tired of checking for the ones clipped into the wall. So, after abandoning that, the next outbreak I went to was a Revavroom outbreak. It only took me knocking out thirty of them to get the golden one. I should have left Yungoos to rot in a cave sooner.

Number 92

There was another outbreak I needed to go to and that was a Combee outbreak. This one was a little bit longer of a hunt and I had to use a bug-type sandwich boost to help seed things along. Fortunately, I did manage to find the red one soon enough. The one good thing about the rules I have set for this challenge is that I didn’t have to worry if it was female or not since I can only catch a Vespiquen for it to count officially. It still would have been nice if it was female though.

Number 93

Next, it was time for some isolated encounters. There was one Pokémon I thought would be nice to have and easy to hunt. It was the Pokémon Sandygast, the only ghost-type Pokémon that spawns at the beach. So, you know what that means. I made a ghost-type encounter sandwich and went around until I found a black sandcastle. It took about half-and-hour, which I can’t complain about. It also happened to have the Cloudy Mark and is now titled Sandygast the Cloud Watcher.

Number 94

There were a couple areas in the game where I didn’t have very many shiny Pokémon. One of them was the autumn area by the lake. I decided to just try my luck and see what happened. I did a full loop of this area and I happened to spot a yellow Fomantis. Since it was in a group of red ones, I figured out quickly that it was a shiny Fomantis. I realize I took an unnecessary risk here by not using isolated encounters, but it worked out so let’s not dwell on it.

Number 95

Now earlier when I went for Sandygast, that wasn’t my first thought for an isolated encounter hunt. I still had some time left before my sandwich expired after the Combee hunt, I went hunting for Rellor until it expired. After Rellor failed to appear, I switched targets and hunted for Sandygast. However, I couldn’t give up on it. I decided that I was committed to this hunt and wouldn’t stop until I finished it. So I stuck with the hunt and eventually I found a Rellor wheeling along a golden ball. I was scared I would miss it, but after actually seeing it I realized that worry was unnecessary.

Number 96

It was a new day and the day I was determined to make it to triple digits. There were two outbreaks with Pokémon that I hadn’t collected yet. The first was Luxray and the second was Haunter. I had to decide which one I wanted to start with. So, I made this decision using the most advanced method possible. I went to Luxray since it was closer. It was a fairly straightforward hunt and I managed to get a yellow Luxray for number 96. Four to go.

Number 97

After that, I went to the Haunter outbreak and did my best, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get it in time. The sun rose in-game and I was forced to wait until the next night cycle. However, the outbreak was in the area where I hunted for Flareon unsuccessfully. I couldn’t stay here if I didn’t want a repeat. So, I warped to the mountains to do some more isolated encounters. There were three that I could think of and I decided to pick the bug type since I already had its evolution. That’s right, I picked Snom. It took about forty minutes to hunt it, but I managed to find its yellow face successfully. Three to go.

Number 98

Now because the hunt took longer than I thought, I didn’t think it would be a good idea to head over to the Haunter outbreak yet because it would probably become daytime before I found the shiny Haunter. So, I decided to do one more isolated encounter. This one would mark the first quarter of the Shiny Living Dex so I had to choose carefully. So, I defaulted to my favorite color purple, and picked Delibird for my hunt. It took roughly the same amount of time as the Snom hunt, but the timing lined up a lot better for the Haunter outbreak as it was sunset in-game. Thanks for being timely, purple Delibird. Two to go.

Number 99

Now, I had to come up with a plan. I successfully stalled for time, but I still wanted to minimize the risk of finding a repeat. The reason I was set on this is there were two slots left in my current shiny box. I could not mess this up. So, I had to use a sandwich. But which one? I spent some time thinking and I realized that the best option was a poison-type encounter boost sandwich. Since Haunter is ghost-type and poison-type, these were the best options to make sure Haunter would spawn. However, since I was playing Pokémon Violet, I had to be wary that Dreepy or Drakloak could spawn. So, the best chance of guaranteeing I would see Haunters by themselves was using the poison-type sandwich. While there was the potential that I could also get a shiny Gastly, at least I didn’t have that one yet.

So, I put my plan into action and made sure to search for a shiny Haunter. Since there were no other poison types in the area, the plan was going well as the majority of Pokémon around me were Gastly and Haunter. Now, all I had to do was find the shiny Haunter. There are two distinguishing traits for its shiny form. The first is that its tongue is blue. The second is that it is a lighter shade of purple. It isn’t a big difference, but I thought it would be more noticeable in a group. Turns out, it was. I noticed one looking away from me looked lighter than the rest of them. I went to look at its face to confirm and the tongue was blue. I caught it and now there was one left to go.

Number 100

Now earlier, I left something out. That wasn’t the entire plan. There was always a possibility that I couldn’t find a shiny Gastly before I found the shiny Haunter in the outbreak. So, if I didn’t get a shiny Gastly to spawn, there was the possibility another repeat would spawn. So, once I got the Haunter I needed to go somewhere else as soon as possible. Preferably, somewhere where I could find a poison type that I had yet to encounter for the Shiny Living Dex. Thankfully, I knew exactly where to go. There was a beach outside of Levincia where only one poison type spawned. I still had about fifteen minutes left on the sandwich. I wasted no time and started hunting. It was a gamble, but I hope that things would work out. And then, ten minutes later, it happened. I found a pink shiny Mareanie on the beach and with that I managed to find one hundred unique shinies. It’s fitting how I got another pink shiny for number one hundred.

I finally made it to triple digits. Now it’s time to keep on hunting. I’m closer, but I still have a ways to go. See you next update.

Shiny Living Dex (81-90)

And we’re back with another installment of this little series. Let’s see what I got for phase four of the Flareon hunt.

Number 81

You know, considering how common this Pokémon is, I am amazed it took me this long to get this shiny. Trust me, I’m not complaining, but I just find it odd is all. Well, at least it is a nice shade of… pink. Seriously, can someone tell me what is with all the pink shiny Pokémon in this game. I like pink as much as the next guy, but I think they might have overdone it. Still caught it though.

Number 82

Now it was time for outbreaks again. There were three outbreaks I had my sights on this time. They were Misdreavus, Magnemite, and Basculin. I decided to head to Misdreavus first since it was still night in-game and ghost types always despawn during the day. So I headed over and hunted there for about half an hour. Then, I managed to find a green Misdreavus at the top of a cliff. Not a bad start to the hunts today. Two more outbreaks to go.

Number 83

Next up was Magnemite, the pre-evolution of Magneton. This hunt took about twice as long as the other one. I also had trouble catching it and had to reload the save twice before I actually caught it. It was definitely worth the trouble for that nice gold sheen though. It also happened to be marked too with an uncommon mark. So its title was Magnemite the Sociable. It was pretty cool to get marks on back-to-back days if I’m being honest.

Number 84

I headed over to the final outbreak of the day. It was a Basculin outbreak, and thankfully this one actually worked. This game sometimes likes to spawn terrible outbreaks or ones that just don’t work, especially for water Pokémon. So you can imagine my relief when I found that they spawned pretty easily. Now this, was a long hunt. And as is typical for me and long hunts, I found other shiny Pokémon that weren’t my target. The first one was a repeat Psyduck, but the next one was this really cool turtle. I wasn’t entirely sure what shiny Drednaw looked like, but man does it have a nice shiny. The dark green with the black shell looks so good.

Number 85

Now this shiny, was a bit unexpected. I know what you’re thinking. You were at a Basculin outbreak and you got a shiny Basculin, what is there to be surprised about? Well, there is a certain mechanic that I may have glossed over. You might remember me saying that certain Pokémon have different forms. Well, certain forms are harder to find than others and the reason is because of outbreaks. For some reason, even though the outbreaks will show certain forms on the map, the actual outbreak will always spawn the base form of a Pokémon. As an example, the Tatsugiri outbreak where I got my shiny Curly Form Tatsugiri was actually displayed as a Stretchy Form outbreak. However, since Curly Form is the default form, then that is the one that spawned in.

Basculin has two forms. One is the Red-Striped Form and the other is the Blue-Striped Form. The default form is the Red-Striped Form. So even though the outbreak was displayed as the Blue-Striped Form, the ones that actually spawned were the Red-Striped Form. You might have an understanding of where this is going. Yes, somehow I got no luck with the outbreak, but about fifteen minutes before the outbreaks reset, I found a random Blue-Striped Form Basculin just chilling by itself. I noticed that it seemed to be lime green as opposed to its normal dark green, but I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me at this point. Nope, it was a shiny Blue-Striped Basculin. Unexpected, but at least I didn’t do the outbreak with no payout right?

Number 86

So I didn’t get the Red-Striped Basculin before the outbreak rest, but I did manage to find a new outbreak to hunt in. The Pokémon at the outbreak was Eeletrik, which made me a bit nervous. The evolution line of this Pokémon, save for the final form, have very hard-to-spot shinies. However, I convinced myself that I would be able to notice the green dots on its side. I was wrong. The only reason I did get it was while I was knocking out Pokémon during the outbreak, my Quaquaval (Quaxly’s final form) refused to battle one of them. I was confused until it ran into me and I saw the sparkles. Well, it was about time that I was humbled I guess. I still caught it though so whatever. A win’s a win.

Number 87

Next up it was back to hunting for Flareon. As you may remember, I was on phase five after finding four completely random shinies save for Scovillain. When I made the fire sandwich, I was secretly hoping for that spicy pepper sporting those apple-bottom jeans. However, there was a serious danger that I would find more than one while looking for Flareon. I was a bit worried, but that worry lessened when about five minutes into the fire-type boost sandwich I found a shiny Espathra. I wasn’t expecting to complete the Flittle line, but I’ll take a brown ostrich over a repeat any day. Unfortunately, after this, my luck ran out of not finding repeats.

Number 88

While still on the hunt for Flareon, I was able to find out how to make a level-two sandwich for fire-type encounter boosts. I was finally starting to understand how sandwiches worked. However, that just netted me my third Scovillain. I can’t understand how my luck works sometimes. The sandwich netted me nothing but repeats. I figured once it ended I would try something new, but right before it ended I found a shiny Altaria. It almost flew away from me, but luckily I managed to catch the yellow bird before it flew away. Still no Flareon.

Number 89

Now you are probably wondering why this Pokémon is only appearing now. Well, according to the rules I set, I am going for a full Shiny Living Dex. That means I need three of each starter to complete the line. I happened to hatch another shiny Quaxly and I evolved it into a Quaxwell. It still sports the mint green hairdo, but it makes it work. Only one more Quaxly to go before I see the final evolution.

Number 90

This final encounter was when I was hunting for Tynamo because for some reason I really felt like torture that day. I had finally figured out how to make a level-two electric sandwich and I even found a good spot to hunt it. However, it seems the going theme is I never find my targets on these hunts anymore. I found two shiny Pokémon doing this. The first was the other form of Basculin I needed, and the other was a shiny Golduck. Somehow, even though it was facing away from me, I could tell it was shiny because it looked slightly darker. To confirm, I went up to it and saw its reddish beak and then I caught it. Simple enough, but I never did get that Tynamo.

Alright, I am almost a quarter of the way there. Full speed ahead! Looking forward to hitting triple digits.

Shiny Living Dex (71-80)

We are getting closer and closer to the end of this, at least for now. Let’s start by talking a little about failure.

Number 71

Remember when I hunted for all three Tatsugiri? I hope so because this won’t make much sense otherwise. The Pokémon Tatsugiri actually synergizes with another Pokémon in double battles, with each form giving it a different synergy. One of them helps boosts its attack, another its defense, and the last one buffs its speed. The Pokémon that synergizes with them is called Dondozo. Can I just say that is one of my favorite Pokémon names ever? Anyway, I wanted to get its shiny form since it would pair up so well with my Tatsugiri. I had been waiting for an outbreak for a while and I finally got one.

Now I learned an important lesson. When resetting, do not jump and hover since it is harder to correct yourself in the air. I was resetting for a couple of hours and in the process of resetting, I turned my camera around and saw a giant yellow catfish swim away and despawn in front of my eyes. All I could do was watch as I lost the shiny. That one actually hurt a little. Sure I reclaimed it in about half an hour, but the pain I felt was real.

Number 72

The other outbreak I had to go to was Kilowattrel. I needed this one to complete the evolution line for the Pokémon Wattrel. I’ll give you one guess which one. Anyway, to help my search go quicker, I also used a flying-type encounter boost sandwich to force more of them to spawn. After a while, I managed to encounter it and capture it to finally complete the line. And yes, it is also pink.

Number 73

After that, it was time for some more isolated outbreak hunts, so I went and made myself a steel-type sandwich boost and went to the quarry area to search for encounters. I was hoping to not get any repeat shiny Pokémon here, but then I remembered that Varoom exists. So, I warped over to the desert where the only steel type that spawns there is Orthworm. I found the blue one five minutes after warping there. Pretty cool shiny Pokémon if I’m being honest.

Number 74

So something weird happened. The next day three outbreaks spawned and I figured I would head over to the Bronzor one first since I had never seen that outbreak before. The spot wasn’t great, but I was determined to see things through. And then, out of nowhere, all of the outbreaks reset. Honestly, not sure how it happened, but now the outbreaks were a lot less appealing. So, I decided to hatch some eggs in the meantime and just mess around. However, I noticed upon a second look that there was an outbreak I missed. It turned out that there was a Surskit outbreak on the map. I had never seen the outbreak before, but I was on the fence about checking it out. So I looked up the shiny. Fast forward two hours and I now had a shiny Surskit. In my defense, I really like dark blue.

Number 75

The next day I got a second chance at an outbreak that I lost the day before. It was the Magikarp outbreak. I saved the game to be sure that I was going to get it this time. I headed on over and was pretty off and on hunting there that day. Eventually, I decided that before I lose focus again, I should try and do the responsible thing and multitask. So I called my friends out of the blue to keep things interesting. Yes, I still call people. anyway, the hunt ended while I was on the phone as I finally found a golden carp. 25 to go until 100.

Number 76

I still really wanted Rellor, so while I was still chatting with my friends, I went back to the desert. I also decided to finally hatch the eggs that I had been meaning to hatch for a few days. I should mention that I was using the Masuda Method to hunt starters. I procured a foreign Ditto with the code 4448 4448 on the Portal and had it breed at the picnic with all of my starters. That way, I wouldn’t know which one I was going to get. Well, during the call I found out. It was a pink Fuecoco. Figures the first shiny starter I find is the pink one.

Number 77

Yeah, somehow in the same batch of eggs, I was able to also find another shiny starter. This time it was a shiny Quaxly. I honestly thought the mint green hair wasn’t real at first, and then it sparkled. I managed to get two shiny Pokémon in the same batch of eggs. Maybe I should shiny hunt with my friends on the phone more often. Didn’t get the Rellor, but I guess I can’t complain.

Number 78

Now, I realized I was starting to get a lot closer to the one-hundred mark and I only had one of Eevee’s evolutions. This bothered me. So I decided to try adding another to the collection. The two easiest hunts I could think of for this were Flareon and Jolteon. So I decided to try out Flareon. Yes, at this point I kind of forgot about Bounsweet. Whoops. Well anyway, I went to where I knew they spawned and went for a fire-type sandwich. There were two options I could find, Flareon or Scovillain. Guess who I found.

Yeah, it wasn’t my target, but after seeing it sport those nice jeans, you can’t help but love the guy.

Number 79

To be honest, I expected to find at least one Scovillain during this hunt, so I wasn’t too surprised that was the shiny I got for the first phase. However, it wasn’t time to stop yet so I moved on to phase two. I’ll be honest here and say that this shiny Pokémon looked better than I thought. You may remember I have all the forms of shiny Deerling. I knew I would have to hunt for its evolution, Sawsbuck. However, I didn’t have any plans to look for it yet due to a lack of confidence. However, I noticed this one immediately so I do have a bit more confidence. Still not sure how I managed to spot light brown, but at least that is progress.

Number 80

Let’s end things off with another marked shiny. I was working on phase three when I looked over a saw a giant yellow grasshopper. It was just standing there menacingly! However, it was a shiny Pokémon and one I didn’t have so I couldn’t falter here. I had to be strong and capture it for my growing collection. Welcome to the party Lokix the Peckish!

Only twenty more to go for 100. We’re getting there. See you for phase four of the Flareon hunt.

Shiny Living Dex (61-70)

Time for the next batch and we get to start out with a special one this time.

Number 61

I can honestly say that I haven’t been this excited to find a shiny since I hunted Shiny Darkrai in Pokémon Shining Pearl. When my Pokémon refused to attack the Ditto, I was in shock. I had to be sure though, so I saved and reset the game. There is this glitch where if you save in front of a disguised shiny Pokémon, the game will disguise them with their true appearance. So when I loaded up the game, I was met with a blue Ditto in front of me. I finally got my target on phase seven. It took four shiny Meowths and two shiny Grimers, but it was worth it.

Number 62

Next, I decided to go hunting for Bounsweet. No real reason why, but I wasn’t ready for another disguised encounter shiny just yet. The best way I could find to hunt for them was to have them spawn at a particular tree near Los Platos until one of them popped out shiny. It is definitely a slower-paced hunt, but it wasn’t as if I would not get anything in the meantime. At one point I noticed a Pichu behind me that looked like a was a darker shade of yellow than the others. I thought it was just the lighting until I encountered it. Turns out it was shiny.

Number 63

Later that day I was doing some more resets for Bounsweet when I realized an Eiscue outbreak had spawned. I realized if I went for this I would be getting yet another pink shiny. So, I went right over. It took me just about fifteen minutes to find this pick penguin. The one thing I love the most about these pink shinies is how easy they are to spot.

Number 64

Speaking of easy to spot pink shinies, as I was hunting for Bounsweet again, I couldn’t help but notice a certain brightly colored squirrel in the distance. I was actually quite surprised since I had found a Shiny Lechonk about an hour before this. Two pink shinies in one day!? You’ve got to love it. Especially when the squirrel is marked and has the title: Skwovet the Early Riser.

Number 65

Now things started to slow down for outbreaks around this point. No longer could I find four new outbreaks in a single day. Usually, two was the best I could find. A couple days after the pink shiny palooza, I found a unique outbreak. It was a Frosmoth outbreak. It wasn’t a Pokémon I knew very well, but I could at least distinguish it as shiny. It took me a couple of hours and some slight paranoia, but I managed to spot it. The green popped more than I thought it would if I’m being honest.

Number 66

A couple of days later I got a couple more outbreaks, one was for Cryogonal and one was for Cloyster. I started with the Cryogonal outbreak first since I really liked its shiny, but eventually, I switched to Cloyster for a change of pace. Since I got Shellder so quick and Shellder evolves into Cloyster, I thought maybe I would have more luck finding its blue variant. And I did.

Number 67

I headed by to the Cryogonal outbreak determined to keep my eyes peeled for this shiny Pokémon. I kept resetting the outbreak until I looked up and caught a glimpse of an interesting shade of blue. So I climbed up and saw the shiny Cryogonal staring at me with its glowing orange eyes as if it wanted the heat out of my soul. So, I saved and caught it.

Number 68

The next day I decided to pause phase four of the Bounsweet hunt. I decided that since I wasn’t having much luck with it then a change of pace was necessary. So I decided to do some isolated encounters elsewhere. But first, I had a Dragonair outbreak to go to. We’ve got to keep getting these pink shinies. Pink shinies for the win!!!

Number 69

As I mentioned in a previous post, I wanted a team of gold shinies. I already had four contenders for the role. I needed two more. The two I was going for were Magikarp and Rellor and since Magikarp was a more common outbreak, I decided to hunt for Rellor. So I made a bug-encounter sandwich to hunt around in the desert and eventually I found a group of Hippopotas with one of them looking a little sickly. Oh wait, that’s shiny. That would explain the lack of brown.

Number 70

Well, the Rellor hunt was a bust. I’ll probably come back to it later, but for now onto another isolated encounter. This time I went for an Oricorio with a fire boost sandwich. This encounter is basically guaranteed so there is no way I’d mess this up right? Right. I will need a few more of these in the future, but right now I am satisfied with actually getting a target. Only took twenty minutes to get this black-colored bird.

Alright, that about wraps it up. Join me next time for a touching story of defeat and redemption. Okay, maybe not touching, but anyway please read the next one. Pretty please?

Shiny Living Dex (51-60)

We’re halfway to one hundred. Let’s roll on into it! We got some fun ones this time.

Number 51

Now the next two days were also pretty outbreak heavy. The first day had three I was dead set on going for that day. They were Magneton, Varoom, and Forretress. The reason was they all have gold shiny colors. Due to the texture updates in this game, they look so nice. So I decided to go for them in the hopes of getting a full group of gold shiny Pokémon one day. I first went to the Magneton outbreak, but I wasn’t getting any luck so I made a temporary retreat. Then I went to the Varoom outbreak and met with similar results. So what was left was the Forretress outbreak which took about ten minutes. The road to gold shinies was no longer a dream.

Number 52

Next, it was time to head back and do some more outbreak hunts. I tried to find Varoom again, but after finding that Forretress, all I could see was gold like it was California in the 1850s. Eventually, I calmed down and went back to the Magneton outbreak. Now I was having trouble until I started changing my reset method. I decided to reset from on top of the mountainous area instead and somehow that did the trick. One to go.

Number 53

This one still took a bit of time after and dodging the others was a bit difficult because they move so fast. Eventually, I spotted it and wondered how the heck I was mistaking other Varooms for this form. Clearly, I underestimated how much the gold color popped on this one.

Number 54

After achieving my goal, I thought about calling it, but then I decided I would just go for every other outbreak on the map. So I head to a Buizel outbreak I had. I dove into the water and a bright yellow Buizel was floating there. The easiest outbreak of my life. I didn’t even have to do anything.

Number 55

Next up was Chewtle, another outbreak that was nearby. This wasn’t as quick, but the hunt still didn’t take me very long. It was only about twenty minutes before I found myself a green turtle. One last outbreak to go.

Number 56

Now, this outbreak is one of the most common spawns in Pokémon Violet. At least it is for me. However, I needed to do one eventually, so why not add a little challenge? So I got to work with an hour left to go before the outbreaks reset. Again, it was another quick hunt that only lasted twenty minutes or so. I thought it would be a bit harder to notice the green, but I guess not. No complaints here.

Number 57

After getting decent luck with the outbreaks the day before I decided to check them out again today. There were two I was to attempt. The first was a Klefki outbreak and it had a gold shiny so I wanted it. The second was for Floatzel, the evolution for Buizel. I wanted it to complete the line. I decided to go for Klefki and for whatever reason they were really struggling to spawn. To be honest, I made a sandwich to help but I have no idea if it did anything. Still got it though.

Number 58

Since the Floatzel outbreak was nearby, I dived off the cliff and into the water to get started. Unfortunately, I may have been a little too happy-go-lucky with resets. I am pretty sure I accidentally despawned the shiny Floatzel which was unfortunate. However, it may have been a blessing in disguise since I managed to snag a random red Clauncher out of it. What is it with this line and chilling by random outbreaks?

Number 59

After that Clauncher and another Wattrel surprisingly, I did manage to get another yellow Floatzel and complete the Buizel line. It could have been done sooner, but at least it wasn’t a total waste of time. After this, I tried the Ditto hunt again. Does anybody need a shiny Meowth?

Number 60

The next day I continued the Ditto hunt. Still no luck to be seen. I decided to head over to the Qwilfish outbreak to mix things up again since I was now on phase seven of the hunt. Qwilfish was a relatively easy catch and I once again added to my pink shiny collection.

Nintendo, You Need to Stop.

Sometimes it isn’t easy being a Nintendo fan. They can make questionable decisions regarding releases and promotions. However, right now that isn’t the problem I have with them. The problem is the amount of choices that I have to work with right now. I was just starting to make a serious attempt to try and clear out some of my Steam backlog and then that Nintendo Direct came out and messed with all of my plans. Let’s start small and then work are way up.

Now, I have mentioned before on this blog that Kirby’s Return to Dreamland was one of my first Kirby games. now I really enjoyed that game, but I wasn’t really sure if I was willing to get the Deluxe version they were releasing. It might be a nice throwback, but it is a little much to buy it again just because of better controls. There needed to be a little extra for me to consider it and then they announced that extra Magolor epilogue. It looks fun too. That wasn’t even the biggest announcement though. There was something even more shocking than that and of course it was Metroid related.

They decided, out of nowhere, to drop that they are releasing a remastered version of the original Metroid Prime. There was no buffer or anything. I was shocked. Did anyone ask for this? I have no idea. Do I want it? Yes, I do. Again, I am trying not to spend all this money right at the beginning of the year. We just started and already there are two games I want. What’s worse is that I am even tempted to purchase The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before the sequel comes out, because it is on sale this week. I always used my friend’s copy to play it previously.

You might be thinking that not spending money is simple. And you know what, you’re right. If I really wanted to, I could hold myself back from getting these games. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter whether or not I spend money, because they decided to also reveal that Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online. In fact, they are already here. Do you know what I have been doing in-between shiny hunts all week? I’ll tell you. I’ve been playing The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap. That’s right, I spend most of my time this week gambling for figurines in a Legend of Zelda game. And yes, I did get all of them. That’s just one game though, there are a bunch more I want to play. I just don’t have the time though.

The worst part is I am running into this problem in February. FEBRUARY. There are still ten months left in the year. We have barely gotten started and I am already wishing that I could stop time. So, Nintendo. I am asking you this from the bottom of my heart. Chill. Let me get some time to enjoy your games so I don’t feel the need to divide my time between a bunch of different games before The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom comes out. That’s all. Have some mercy on my sanity and my wallet would you? If you’re wondering why I am just writing about this, it is because I needed a week to process. I left a bunch of stuff out, but I need to go before my brain explodes. See you next week.

Also, if you want to hear about all of the other things go here. Obviously, there was a lot more that they announced so feel free to check it out.

Shiny Living Dex (41-50)

We’re almost to number fifty everyone. Will one of these be a shiny Ditto? I wish.

Number 41

I went back to hunting for Ditto and found a couple more shinies. And yes, one of them was a Meowth. At least it was marked with a rare mark. However, the other was, fortunately, a unique shiny. Even though I was using normal-type boosts, I still managed to have a shiny Grimer slip in through the cracks. The green pile of sludge wasn’t that bad a find though. Even if this meant going into my fifth phase, I was just glad it wasn’t another Meowth.

Number 42

It was a new day and a new batch of outbreaks. Today I decided that I would head to two different outbreaks. The first outbreak I decided to go for was a Wattrel outbreak. I figured I should just take care of it now and decided it wouldn’t be a difficult hunt. I even used a sandwich to force more to spawn in. Yet somehow, the pink bird I found was not the one I was aiming for. Instead, I ended up with a Murkrow randomly. I’m just so glad it wasn’t Hoppip.

Number 43

You know, I’ve realized that certain shiny Pokémon are easier to distinguish at different times of the day. I was struggling trying to see this bird once it hit nighttime. I did get the Murkrow, but that wasn’t what I came for and I wasn’t leaving without one. Eventually, after stumbling about in the dark for a little bit, I managed to get one. Not my favorite pink shiny, but in fairness, there is a lot of competition.

Number 44

After successfully getting the target shiny from the Wattrel outbreak, I headed over to the other outbreak I had planned for the day: Bronzong. Thankfully the time of day didn’t matter with noticing this one. Green is a standout color in snowy mountains. It took about an hour, but all-in-all, not a bad hunt.

Number 45

On my way back from the hunt, I decided to take a scenic trip up the mountain. Just figured I would relax a bit before attempting the Ditto hunt again. While I was up there, I ran into a new friend. A shiny Cetoddle just waddled up to me and smiled at me as if we were meant to be together. Turns out she was right. Now I had a friendly gray buddy by my side. Yay! By the way, the Ditto attempt netted me the privilege of a new phase with a second shiny Grimer.

Number 46

The next day was a time for more outbreaks. You might be familiar with these shiny Pokémon from a previous post involving spotting the shiny Pokémon. If not, I will say that I finally found that Slowpoke outbreak I was looking for and I actually managed to notice it even though the only major difference is that its pink body is a slightly lighter pink when compared with a normal Slowpoke. I had to really study the difference beforehand to make sure I wouldn’t fail it, but it all worked out. Figures though that the shiny for the pink Pokémon would end up being pastel pink.

Number 47

Next up was a Venomoth outbreak, and this outbreak was a bit weird. Now there are some Pokémon that are affected by the day and night cycle. Some Pokémon only spawn in the morning while others only spawn at night. Venomoth shouldn’t have a restriction like that, and yet the outbreak would always despawn during the day for some reason. So, I kept jumping back and forth between each outbreak until one paid out and instead I got a purple, marked Foongus. Still amazed I noticed Foongus the Sodden in the rain, but it was nice to see him. I would later find another I used for the challenge after one of the outbreaks paid out.

Number 48

The one that paid out was the Arrokuda outbreak. This Pokémon was playing real tricks on me in the water. The lighting kept making me think they look different and I kept leaving to check the Venomoth outbreak so I was struggling a bit. Eventually, I decided to just focus on the Arrokuda outbreak and thankfully that ended up working. Another Pokémon I am amazed I actually spotted. That hunt really made me fear for when I have to find Tynamo later. Small, blue, shiny Pokémon in the water should be against the law or something.

Number 49

Once Arrokuda was settled, I could now focus all of my efforts on catching Venomoth. Even with a limited time frame and the distraction of the second shiny Foongus, I managed to spot the shiny. Honestly, it popped way more than I thought it would so needless to say that I was satisfied with this hunt. For some reason I forgot this one was also blue until I spotted it.

Number 50

The final shiny to wrap things up was the last outbreak I visited that day. It was an outbreak for shiny Shellder. Since I started using the proper hunting method, this was the fastest I found a shiny. I only knocked out 20 or so Shellder before the orange version spawned. It was nice to end on an easy one.

We finally are at fifty. We are halfway to one hundred now. Can’t stop, won’t stop. Although I hope the hunts are easier on the eyes.

Shiny Living Dex (31-40)

Alright, it is time for the next batch of Pokémon. I know I left things off on a bit of a cliffhanger last time, so let’s just jump right into it.

Number 31

Now the other outbreak I went to the day I caught the Wooper was an Azurill outbreak. I headed on over right after I got the Wooper and proceeded to use a fairy-type encounter sandwich to help move things along. I’ll be honest the lighting in this game messed with me a couple of times during the hunt, but eventually, I caught the green little guy. Unfortunately, the Ditto hunt didn’t go so well.

Number 32

Now, this shiny Pokémon was a bit of a surprise for me. It is nowhere near the Ditto outbreak I usually hunt at and if I am being honest I was lucky that I was distracted. I believe I was coming back from an unsuccessful outbreak attempt when I ran into a Dreepy in a group with a Drakloak. They just randomly spawned in front of me and I was distracted so I didn’t start paying attention until I hit something. Turns out that there was a shiny Dreepy in the group. The only reason I noticed its light blue head was because of the collision. This is probably the only time being distracted while driving has worked out for anybody.

Number 33

Now the next day started off with a bang. I decided to hit up three different outbreaks that day. The first outbreak I decided to head to was a Silicobra. The main reason was it was the only one that was not by that lake. I wanted at least a bit of new scenery. So I warped over to the place that was closest to the outbreak. On my way, I saw a group of Makuhita with a Hariyama and one of them was sporting red boxing gloves. That was probably the first time I found a shiny on the way to an outbreak. Nice.

Number 34

Don’t worry. I made it to the outbreak. However, in the process of getting the shiny I was going for by despawning Pokémon in the outbreak, I found a random shiny Dugtrio just chilling by the outbreak. I am still amazed that I noticed its blue noses.

Number 35

Once I understood how outbreaks should be done, things were a lot easier. It didn’t take long until I managed to see the glowing yellow eyes of this shiny snake. It didn’t take long at all and I even got two extra shinies out of it. Surely, we can keep up this lucky streak right?

Number 36

The answer is no. I decided to do the shiny Veluza outbreak in the lake. I thought it wouldn’t be so bad. I was so wrong. Not only was I doing this hunt for three hours before I finally found the shiny one, but these guys would just not leave me alone! My god they are the most aggressive and obnoxious Pokémon to ever exist. Not to mention that the lake had me dropping frames like I was vandalizing a frame store. Honestly, a pretty miserable experience. At least the green looks nice.

Number 37

I needed the next outbreak to be easier to get over that whole fiasco. Thankfully it was and I got away scot-free. It was a Drakloak outbreak and the only reason I went is because of the Dreepy I got before. The fact that the shiny has a Dreepy on its head with the same shiny colors is very useful for spotting it as well as the fact that it has a lot less red on its body. Unfortunately, finishing the line with the rules I’ve set is not going to be easy. Let’s leave that problem to the future me.

Number 38

It was a new day of shiny hunting and I saw an old friend appearing in an outbreak: Bombirdier. In case you couldn’t sense the sarcasm there, let me spell it out. I hate Bombirdier. Its shiny is not that bad. I just always get the worst luck with its outbreaks to the point that it is mentally draining. This would be my third attempt at it. However, I made a commitment to myself to finally get it. Then after finding a bunch of them spawning in the ground I decided to come back later. There was another outbreak I went to instead and after doing a few resets I managed to find myself a shiny red lobster.

Number 39

The funny thing is the outbreak I was at wasn’t a Clawitzer outbreak. It was a Finizen outbreak. Yeah, it was just a random shiny that occurred during resets. Since I didn’t have a shiny Finizen yet, I kept going until I did. Thankfully, a purple dolphin is pretty noticeable in the water.

Number 40

Finally, I went back to that Bombirdier outbreak. At this point, I had already accepted deep down that I was going to go all out on shiny hunts from now on. So, I headed back and hoped that the shiny Pokémon wouldn’t spawn in the floor. Unfortunately, it isn’t the most obvious shiny, but that didn’t stop me from accidentally running into it. Listen, I’ll take what I can get. I do wish the gray wasn’t as difficult to spot though.

That does it for this batch. To find out whether or not I get a shiny Ditto, tune in next time!

Shiny Living Dex (21-30)

This post captures Pokémon 21 through 30 for the Shiny Living Dex. Let’s begin with another annoying hunt, because that is my life sometimes.

Number 21

After the Glalie outbreak, I didn’t feel like doing much more shiny hunting. I didn’t really do much except try and find a Tatsugiri and I came back with nothing to show for it. So the next day, I started with another outbreak. It was a Luvdisc outbreak, and how fitting that this one is the first one I talk about right after Valentine’s Day. This outbreak was in the water so the frame rate dropped a bit, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the worst of it. The hunt was so long. Again, I know I am not using outbreaks effectively, but spending three hours in the water was kind of annoying. It got to the point where my eyes were starting to play tricks on me. Thankfully this shiny Pokémon stands out very easily. Yellow is one of the few colors to pop in the water, so I’m thankful for that.

Number 22

I decided that I would take a break from the Tatsugiri hunt for a bit. I already had one and so I decided to use that to cope and move on. For now at least. So, I decided to do some more isolated encounter hunting. For the record, isolated encounter hunting is a fancy way of referring to using type boost sandwiches to force a particular type of Pokémon to spawn. Remember how I used a dragon-boost sandwich to force a ton of Cyclizar to spawn. It’s the same thing. Anyway, the Pokémon I was hunting for was Larvesta. Don’t know why I picked it, but I like its shiny colors so I guess it doesn’t matter. So, I decided to use a fire-type boost sandwich.

Now I should mention that each boost has three levels. Each level forces more of that type to spawn. However, having a higher level boost doesn’t mean you won’t run into any other Pokémon. It just reduces the odds. Especially in my case since I only knew how to do level-one fire sandwiches. So, it wasn’t a huge surprise that I ended up finding a shiny Phanpy chilling in a little group with its big brother Donphan. Honestly, this shiny isn’t easy to notice and the only reason I did was because of the others next to it. Shiny Phanpy is simply a lighter shade of blue than a normal Phanpy.

That isn’t to say Phanpy is normally a dark blue, but it can look that way when next to its shiny form. Honestly, it isn’t the best alternate color scheme. I will never complain about getting a shiny though. Even if I already have three of them (Looking at you Hoppip).

Number 23

Well, luckily for me I did manage to get my Larvesta. Honestly, this is a bit of a crazy story but I like to think it was kind of cool. Now, after a couple of days, I was having no luck with the sandwich method. Luckily though an outbreak for Larvesta coincidentally spawned so I thought I would run with it. I thought it was only a matter of time until I found it. that was my overconfidence. I spend some time doing it on and off but I wasn’t getting any luck. The time kept ticking until it was about ten minutes to midnight. One it hit midnight the outbreak would reset so I had to make a call. Do I bother keeping this up?

I eventually decided that at this point, the worst that would happen would be I’d waste another ten minutes so I kept at it. I had only a sliver of hope I was holding onto at this point, but even that dwindled steadily with each passing second. And then, a miracle happened. At 11:59 pm, I found the one with yellow horns. He looked so beautiful to me at that moment. That was definitely too close for comfort. Thankfully, shiny Pokémon do not despawn once the outbreaks reset for the next day so all I had to do was save and catch. I know I don’t nickname my Pokémon, but if I did, this Larvesta would be named Miracle.

Number 24

I still wasn’t quite ready to keep hunting for Tatsugiri so I wanted to pick another target. Now I started to notice at this point that there was not a lot of type variety to my shinies. Most of them were normal-type, grass-type, or dragon-type. So I thought it was time to spice things up. The type I decided to go for was a rock-type Pokémon. I was a little salty that I hadn’t found a shiny Nacli ( excuse the lame pun) and shiny Klawf was just too cool not to try getting. So I did some rock sandwiches and thought that I would be fine with whichever popped up. Surprisingly, it was the blue crab. Easily one of the best-looking shiny Pokémon in the game. That’s a W for sure.

Number 25

I had delayed long enough. It was time to get back to hunting for the other Tatsugiri forms. So I headed back to the lake and got to work. It was coincidentally around this time that I learned that Slowpoke had a terrible shiny. I thought to myself that the only way I am going to spot this shiny is if it appears in a group. Maybe that is what caused it. As I was moving about I found a group of Slowpoke surrounding a Slowbro. The thing is… it was the Slowbro that shined. Thankfully, its shiny colors are purple and gold so I noticed it right away.

Later on, I would coincidentally get a hacked shiny Slowbro through Wonder Trade. I then deleted it because I honestly don’t get the appeal of hacking in shiny Pokémon. I would have been so annoyed if I had gotten the entry for the Shiny Dex because of a hacked shiny so I’m glad that things worked out. Also, be careful of hacked shiny Pokémon. Just saying.

Number 26

After the Slowbro, I was still on the hunt for Tatsugiri. I kept chugging on through hoping to get myself a new shiny sushi pal. Of course, things wouldn’t go my way though. I ended up with another shiny Pokémon instead, but at least it wasn’t a repeat. It was a shiny Swablu, which makes sense since more Altaria were spawning because of the boost. This yellow Pokémon was the first shiny Pokémon I got in Emerald so it was a little nostalgic seeing it again.

Number 27

The next was an outbreak day for me. I managed to head to a Tatsugiri outbreak and get the Curly Form I was missing, leaving me with one more to go. I decided to go to one more outbreak to close off the day and I managed to find myself a shiny Psyduck. I’m glad I got a nice, blue shiny Pokémon for the Shiny Dex. Was kind of expecting a Whiscash since that was the outbreak I went to, but that works too.

Number 28

The next day… the unthinkable happened. I got the final form of Tatsugiri. I can’t believe I never got a repeat. Now I could move on to an even more brutal hunt. There were three shiny Pokémon that were very unique hunts in this game. These Pokémon are Ditto, Zorua, and Zoroark. These Pokémon appear disguised as other Pokémon in the area and so you can’t tell they are shiny unless you engage them in battle. You can also use the Let’s Go feature to check for them since your Pokémon will refuse to attack a Pokémon in this mode if it is shiny. It’s worth a shot.

After jumping around for a while and foolishly wasting almost all of my Herba Mystica, I decided to hunker down and just go for Ditto. So that meant Normal type boosted sandwiches in the area that they spawn. At the time I didn’t know how sparkling power really worked so I ended up wasting enough Herba Mystica that I never ended up using it on any of my hunts. I didn’t feel like grinding for it. However, that wasn’t to say that the level two sandwiches weren’t working. I managed to get a shiny Meowth for the Dex. Actually, I got two and that was just the beginning of the second-longest hunt I have done so far (in terms of phases). Oh, and guess what? The shiny version is only distinguishable by pink feet. This game really loves pink.

Number 29

After only getting Meowths during my hunt, I decided to switch things up in the hopes that I could break out of the pit I was slowly falling into while hunting for Ditto. I really didn’t want another Hoppip situation. I decided to go to the beginning of the game and hunt for one of the bug types there and I got myself a little spider with a red bundle of yarn on its back. Was my strategy successful in getting a bug shiny? Yes. Did it contribute to anything else? Absolutely not.

Number 30

For the final shiny for this post, we have an interesting little guy I got in an outbreak. It is Paldean Wooper, also known as Pooper to some. I caught the little purple guy in an outbreak in the morning and I was very glad to catch him. I went fairly quickly because I thankfully had a better idea of how outbreaks worked in this game. Thank goodness for that. The best part is he was my second marked shiny and so he is now known as Wooper the Stern. Although it is hard to see him as stern with that face.

I did get another shiny that day from another outbreak, but it seems we are out of time. See you next time for another batch.

Shiny Living Dex (11-20)

It’s time for part two of this series. We will now go on the wondrous journey of shiny hunting once again, this time with repeats. I should mention that while the shinies listed are unique, that doesn’t mean I always got my targets in a timely manner.

Number 11

That little preamble at the beginning is meant for this moment. Spring Form Deerling was quick enough, but more importantly, I didn’t go through any phases. Phasing in shiny hunting refers to when you find different shiny Pokémon than your intended target. You would then count each unintended shiny as its own phase. As an example, my shiny hunt for Summer Form Deerling was five phases. That means I found four shiny Pokémon before I finally found Summer Form Deerling. Unfortunately, three of them were Hoppip so that was disheartening, however, I did snag one unique shiny and that was Oinkologne.

Oinkologne is the evolution of Lechonk so it was a welcome addition since it helped me complete the line of that Pokémon. I got this one on the second phase of the hunt. It was a nice break from getting Hoppip and I eventually found my Summer Form Deerling. I hoped to myself that I would never have a longer phase than that. Looking back, I was hopelessly naïve. That will be a story for later. Thankfully, Autumn Form Deerling was the quickest one by far as it took me about three minutes to get one. That kind of made up for the previous hunt.

Number 12

Eventually, I went over to a friend’s house after Christmas hoping to continue the hunt. That day, there happened to be a Vaporeon outbreak. Now, I had never owned one of the Eevee line shiny before and I thought this was my best chance to mix things up a little. So I headed on over. At this point, I still wasn’t sure how outbreaks worked, but it didn’t stop me from finding a nice, purple Vaporeon. Perhaps, that gave me the luck I needed as I later found the last Deerling I wanted, completing the set.

Number 13

Moving on to my next target, I wanted to get a shiny Cyclizar. The hunt itself is pretty straightforward. Head to the area by the desert where they spawn and use a sandwich to boost dragon-type encounters. From there, it is a race to get the shiny. This hunt is slightly difficult because while a ton of Cyclizar will spawn, they will be constantly on the move so once the shiny spawns you have to dodge the moving Cyclizar while catching up to the shiny before it despawns. When it happened to me, I was slightly worried, but thankfully I was able to dodge the others and catch up to the shiny one. It did help that the shiny Cyclizar drove into a wall, but I wasn’t about to be picky. I didn’t have time to save beforehand this time, but I caught it with no real trouble. Tan shiny Pokémon acquired.

Number 14

Now after that quick hunt, it was time for my next target. Now since the Cyclizar hunt was only about twenty minutes I figured I shouldn’t waste the rest of this sandwich boost and try and find another dragon-type. The one I wanted was by the lake that was nearby. It was a Pokémon called Tatsugiri, a new Pokémon for this generation. It kind of looks like sushi and so I wanted it. So, I tried my luck and I found a shiny… Goomy. Honestly, I’ll take it. Yellow and pink look pretty good on it.

Number 15

Now I wasn’t about to give up just because of one phase, so I made some more sandwiches to boost dragon-type encounters. Before I go into what happened, I need to talk a little about Tatsugiri. This Pokémon has three different forms. Unlike Deerling, these forms are not determined by the environment. Instead, the different forms affect how they act, along with one other thing that I will get to eventually. The three forms are the Curly Form, the Droopy Form, and the Stretchy Form. The Curly Form curls up, the Droopy Form droops down, and the Stretchy Form stretches out. Pretty self explanatory.

Each of these forms has its own shiny colors. The Droopy Form is the easiest to spot since it goes from pink and white to completely white. The Curly Form stays orange but gets a brown splotch on its back like someone put soy sauce on it. Lastly, the Stretchy Form goes from yellow to orange with yellow lines on its back. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to you, but the Stretchy Form is the hardest to spot since you can confuse it with the Curly Form which is also orange. The best way to notice it is if you see an orange Tatsugiri stretch instead of curling up. Well, that’s what happened to me, surprisingly. I don’t know how I managed it, but I met my target.

Also, take note of the fact that this Pokémon knows Memento, a move that causes it to faint immediately after use. If you encounter it make sure you have autosave off and save in front of it in case you need to reset the encounter. I haven’t mentioned this before now, but it was important to bring it up here. Luckily, the Stretchy Tatsugiri did not have that move.

Number 16

Now, as I mentioned in a previous post, I wanted to collect every form of a Pokémon I can find. So I started hunting for the other two with another sandwich. After a while, I did find another shiny Pokémon, except it wasn’t even a dragon-type this time. Instead, it was a Tropius. Didn’t really know what its shiny form looked like before this, but now I know. Apparently, it is a lighter green color making it look like a dying plant. Get him some water!

Number 17

After that, I was not able to find a shiny Tatsugiri so I decided to change things up. Coincidentally, there was a Jumpluff outbreak nearby and I thought it would be funny to try and get the shiny while already having four Hoppip in storage. So I went and got one. I feel as though this is when I started to realize how many pink shiny Pokémon were in this game.

Number 18

Next up was another outbreak for the evolution of Noibat: Noivern. I don’t know how this Pokémon managed to just rearrange its color scheme to get such a cool shiny, but green has never looked so cool. The biggest trouble I had with it was ensuring I could interact with it once I found it. Pokémon that can fly tend to fly a lot in the daytime and roost during the night so sometimes it can be tricky if it is daytime in-game and the shiny Pokémon is flying around everywhere. I did get it eventually, though; at 10:45 pm. I had a little over an hour left to try and squeeze in one last outbreak.

Number 19

There was a Dratini outbreak nearby and even though I had little more than an hour, I decided to take the gamble. Thankfully, it only took about an hour for the pink to pop in. I was worried that I would miss it, but it seems it was an unnecessary worry. One more addition to the collection of pink shiny Pokémon.

Number 20

The last one for this post was honestly a miserable hunt. It probably would have been easier if I had changed my method, but alas I didn’t know how outbreaks worked still and I’m dumb. Anyway, there was a Glalie outbreak the day after I went hunting after all those shinies and I was ecstatic. Glalie was the last Pokémon I needed to collect for the Snorunt line. There were just two problems. The first was the cliff they spawned on made it very hard to maneuver between them. The second was the shiny itself. Glalie doesn’t have a great shiny. Its body is greyer and it has red eyes instead of blue.

Honestly, I thought I would miss it after respawning and despawning over and over for over two hours. Luckily, I managed to spot it since it spawned in front of me. Thank god those eyes pop out. Anyway, with that, I had completed the line so all’s well that ends well.

That’s all for this edition. See you next time for more shiny Pokémon! Knowing my luck there will be at least one pink one. And speaking of pink, Happy Valentine’s Day to all those who enjoy the presence of a significant other. I personally do not partake, but I you all enjoy your day anyway!
