Pokémon Go has been around for eight years now and because of that, they have been doing a celebration event that is set to end on Tuesday night. One of the big parts of this celebration event is the Mythical Pokémon Meltan. This Pokémon was introduced in Pokémon Go in November 2018 with its shiny being released a few months later in February 2019. Now, you might be wondering why this shiny would be considered rare if it has been out for five years. Well, let me explain because things get a bit complicated.
First off, this Pokémon can only be obtained through a special item in the game called the Mystery Box. When activated it will attract Meltan to your location for an hour and they will keep spawning every couple of minutes until the time runs out. To get this box, you need to transfer a Pokémon over to Pokémon HOME or your Nintendo Switch. This will allow you to use the Mystery Box. Once the time runs out, the box will go into a cooldown period, after which you will need to transfer another Pokémon to HOME or the Switch to reactivate it once again. Sounds a bit time-consuming doesn’t it? However, as long as you have enough time, it should be fine to hunt it right? No.

The other big problem is that the shiny is not always available in Pokémon Go. They actually only have this Pokémon available to be shiny during certain special events like this eighth-anniversary event. So you only have a short window of opportunity each year to take advantage of the shiny being available to go for it. The odds are about 1/125 to find it shiny in the game, so the odds aren’t terrible, but if you aren’t lucky you can miss out on this shiny Pokémon. This is especially true if you don’t have easy access to the Mystery Box features.
One other thing to note is that it actually has an evolution that is only accessible in this game so it might be worth it for a collector to grab more than one if they are trying a complete their living dex. Thankfully, I got lucky enough to find two of them. I am just waiting to evolve it since I want to see how many I can get first since I should be able to get at least one more batch off before the event ends. However, at least I have one less thing to worry about in regards to this event at least. This was also a lot easier than my last shiny mythical hunt so I have no complaints. Have a good night everyone and wish me luck!
